what kind of exercise equipment is good?
i am overweight and needing to exercise on a regular basis. i due have joint problems that prevent me from doing alot, i also work 12 hr shifts. i stay tired but I need to exercise daily. gonna start after the holidays. should i get an eliptical or stationary bike or recumbent bike? is a bike enough to burn calories and help to lose weight when combined with diet?
I have a stationary bike, the kind with swinging handles so it works both the lower and upper body. It’s great to burn calories. I burn 32 calories per mile. My moderate speed is between 12mph and 14mph so I burn 384 to 448 calories an hour, bicycling away either reading or watching TV.
Even if you would go nonchalantly slow, like 10mph, you would still burn 320 calories an hour, watching TV, which is so much better than just watching TV like a couch potato.
Even if you’d do only half an hour a day, going very slowly, you would burn 1,120 calories a week.
Go to a store and try out different bikes, different kinds, different machines so you know which one fits you the best.
You might also want to consider adding swimming as an aerobic activity. It’s a great whole body workout, low impact (if you have joint problems) and you would burn about 8 calories a minutes at a moderate speed (30 minutes = 240).
I cannot swim as long as I can bike. I swim about half an hour but I can bike up to two hours, watching a movie.
