How long should I be at the gym to get a good work out?
I get really overwhelmed when I walk into the gym. I usually stick to the recumbent cycle because I feel like I know how to use it the best. The gym I go to has recumbent cycles, treadmills, elliptical machines, weights, and various weight machines. What would be a good routine for me? How long should my work out take each day? I'm trying to lose 40lbs. by December but I'm so shy when I get to the gym. There's all guys there and a few girls who can run on the treadmill for 1/2 hour without even sweating. It's so intimidating. I'm definitely one of the few fat people there but I don't want to quit.
I get to go to this gym for free so I don't want to try going somewhere else.
I'm 23 and I'm 5'3"
40 pounds in 12 months. That's 3 1/3 pounds a month. That's about 12000 calories a month, that's 400 calories a day to lose. If you eat 200 less calories you only need to burn 200 calories.
As far as working out you want to switch things up. Don't just jog or use one machine and don't be afraid of free weights and working out your arms. Toning and strengthen your muscles means they use more energy (calories) at rest than they would have. You don't have to bulk up just do toning.
I don't know your body type, age, physical fitness, any health conditions, etc so 30 min of cardio and 30 min of free weights / machines should do the trick. for weights do 20 - 30 reps with 3 - 5 sets. If its too easy add more weight, too hard do less weight.
remember to mix it up. Don't use the same machines at the in the same order. Do cardio first one day, than do it las another. If stuff gets easy add more weight, do more reps, or run longer.
