How do I start running?
I'm work out everyday weight training, ab exercises and riding an incumbent bike. I really enjoy it and it makes me feel good. However, everyone is always raving about how much they like running and I wish I were that way too!
Whenever I run, my lungs and throat hurts from breathing heavy and it's not very fun.
I'm not overweight so I was wondering if I could change how I run or the way I breathe?
Seem's like a cool hobby and any advice is appreciated. thanks
Did you mean 'recumbent' bike (where you are virtually lying down?)??? Those look interesting...
As for running (or jogging), I began by walking...walking as fast as I could for however long I chose (often 30 - 60 mins in the beginning)...when that wasn't strenuous enough, I started adding intervals of jogging...I'd walk 4 mins, jog 1 min...over time I increased the length of the jogging intervals and decreased the length of the walking intervals....
I would also jog a block and walk a block around my neighborhood...eventually I was jogging the cross streets as well, and then 2 blocks together, etc...
It took a while, but eventually I was able to jog a mile straight with no walk breaks, and then I kept working on it until I could jog a 5K (3.1 miles) without stopping for a walk break...That's not very far and I won't win any speed medals, but thats where I am now a days (or just beyond)...I can go about 4 miles before I start hurting and have to stop (but I'm 45 and my hips love to remind me)...
The key is to start small and build up...maybe nose breathing when you inhale, and exhale through your mouth to keep your throat from drying out??? Work on it until you find something that you are satisfied with...I typically inhale for a 2 count and exhale for a 2 count with my lips pursed (like I'm blowing a kiss)...
