Is there anything I could do at the gym that's the equivalent of outdoor running?
For the first time in my life, really, even though I was an athlete up through college and required to run lots of laps, I did some running every day this year and found it got me in super shape. But now it's cold and I have asthma that's affected by that so have to limit my exercise to the gym. I've found that I have really plateaued since the weather has gotten colder as far as conditioning and my body measurements go.
What could I do in the gym that will give me the same workout as running? I think why running works for me is because I have a big build and carry more weight than the average runner so it's harder for me, but the machines in the gym aren't necessarily harder for bigger people. Gravity isn't taken into account as much. I even feel the treadmill isn't as good as the real thing. Elliptical and the bike make me sweat a lot and breathe heavy, but still don't feel as good as outdoor running.

I would have suggested everything you mentioned, just that you might have to work harder at it to get your heart rate up. The other thing would be swimming, if you're a swimmer. I heard that one mile of swimming is approximately equivalent to 4 or 5 miles of running. If you're a runner and really enjoy that, there is probably nothing that is going to feel as good to you. Sorry, wish I could help. It's too bad they don't have any indoor running tracks where you live. You could ask someone who has a job in physical fitness, maybe at the gym you go to, if they have any ideas that would work for you. Good luck!
