Do I Need an Elliptical or a Treadmill?

If you are looking to buy exercise equipment, you will quickly find that today’s buzzwords are elliptical and treadmill.  These two machines are by far the most popular pieces of exercise equipment, and with good reason.  Each offers an array of benefits in helping to eliminate fat, tone muscle, and improve heart and body health.  If you are torn between these two machine types when learning what you need for your workout, it can help to know the benefits of each.

Treadmills and ellipticals may seem similar at first glance, but the truth is that they are quite different.   Where the treadmill is considered a high impact workout due to the pressure put on joints as you land, an elliptical is impact free.  For people with joint problems, this certainly makes the elliptical a better option.  With that said, however, there are also benefits to using a treadmill.  For joggers and long distance runners, a treadmill is a great way to keep up with a routine despite weather and can help increase training before a race or a particularly long run. 

Another difference between the two machines is the workout offered.  A treadmill can provide excellent lower body exercise, but an elliptical with dual action handlebars will also provide a great workout for upper body muscles.  In short, which machine is best for you will depend largely on your needs as well as any medical conditions such as joint problems.  Both treadmills and ellipticals can provide an excellent workout for those looking to get into shape, lose weight, or tone muscle, but choosing the machine that will best meet your specific workout needs is always the best idea.  Taking the time to look at the benefits of many types of exercise equipment can be the best way to ensure that you can meet your fitness goals with ease.
