Let's face it; working in an office setting where at least ninety per cent of your work is conducted sitting down, either on the telephone or on the computer, just isn't the ideal situation for someone who is looking to lose weight. There are many new "toys" developed specifically for people who can't get out of their cubicles for hours which can contribute to hypertension and muscle atrophy.
One toy in particular is the miniature version of an exercise bike, but is a small platform with pedals. You can place this under your desk and pedal to get a great cardio workout in small doses. Apparently, you can burn up to 400 calories an hour using this device. A great way to incorporate cardiovascular activity into your daily working life is by cycling for 10 minutes every hour. You'll give you legs small bursts of activity which can keep your energy levels high without getting overly sweating, typical of cardio workouts. In an average 8 hour shift, you could be working out for almost an hour and a half, burning close to 600 calories. That is a phenomenal amount of calories with the minimum amount of work. These devices range in price, anywhere from $20 and up.
Another inexpensive method of muscle toning in the office is through the use of a stability ball – as a chair. Because of the unbalanced nature of the ball, attempting to perch atop a 65" or larger ball will engage your abdominals and core muscles to provide a moderate core workout without any crunches. In addition to helping tighten your abs, use of the stability ball will also improve your posture and prevent body aches and pains.
Build up of tension in your body will happen if you don't get up every half an hour to stretch your muscles and increase blood flow to various parts of your body. Keep an 8 oz. cup on your desk and get up to fill it periodically with water. Not only will you give yourself the opportunity to get up, you will increase your daily intake of water, which will never hurt you. While you're up, make sure that you take the time to stretch out your muscles, in your arms, neck, and back to relieve pressure and tension. Prevent the pain which comes from sitting for too long rather than having to treat it.
