How come people havn't mass marketed excersise bikes that power an alternator to make electricity?
It would seem to be the perfect machine, since you can get a workout and save a little energy/money at the same time. How come this kind of product hasn't been mass marketed?
I heard a very interesting item on the radio tonight on just this point. Someone in California being interviewed, that it did not make economic sense on an individual basis. The equipment would not produce enough power to warrant the cost, but in gyms where dozens of people work out all day long, enough energy was beng tapped and stored in batteries to meet the entire power needs.
And in the Netherlands, some discos and clubs have a two-layer floor which trap energy from the dancers. The more active and frenetic, the more power being produced. They had some sort of responsive lighting system on the floor which got brighter or changed colour with more activity, and club-goers are seeing it as a challenge to get that floor bright under their feet and have fun at the same time.
